If you're looking at which mattress to buy, then look no further than BedExtra - we have a vast range for you to choose from. Let's face it we all need mattresses. Over and above choosing the right bed frame, the mattress has got to be the single most important aspect of any bed ensemble.  We can live with an old bed frame, we can cope without a headboard but ... trying to sleep on a less than perfect mattress is nothing short of counter-productive.  At best it’s probably going to leave us with nothing other than a bad back, at worst we’ll be left with a persistently grumpy countenance.

At BedExtra we understand the importance of getting a good night's sleep. We’re fully aware of the consequences that can and do arise from sleeping on a low-grade and wholly unsuitable mattress.  We also know some of the more relevant facts relating to sleep, the significance of restful sleep periods and what the words sleep debrivation actually mean!

Mattresses – Which One?

If you’re currently considering the purchase of a new mattress, do you know which one will best suit your needs? Are you aware of the differences between our vast range, and what the following terms mean?

  • memory foam mattress
  • innerspring mattress
  • latex foam mattress
  • open coil mattress
  • offset coil mattress
  • continuous coil mattress

The above are all variants of mattresses, the different components that can be combined in a multitude of ways. It's these components that make the difference between one mattress and the next. Happily we know what the difference is and we use our knowledge to help and advise our customers as to which mattress would best suit their needs.

Considering how much time we spend sleeping during the course of our lives, it's never a bad thing to view your new mattress as a long-term investment in your personal health and well-being. To help you to navigate the different types of mattress that we stock, we’ve created a handy breakdown of the two main inner elements, and what the related benefits are:

Open Spring – these are simply a range of interconnected springs, the core of many commonly purchased products. They’re available in two gauges:

  • 12.5 guage spring
  • 13.5 guage spring

Either of the above two will provide a medium level of support in their own right.

Pocket Spring – each spring stands alone, surround by a small fabric pocket. They’re viewed as being highly supportive, as the springs work independently of each other.

They’re particularly effective in orthopaedic mattress products, and have become well regarded in recent years in relation to their use in memory foam mattresses.

Choosing your mattress and levels of support

How firm a mattress is or isn’t depends as much on a combination of other factors as it does the springs themselves:

  • Mattress depth
  • Other materials – latex, memory foam, fibre filling, wool layers ... there’s a multitude of ways in which a mattress is designed, and this dictates what’s beneath the surface and surrounds the ‘spine’ - the type of springs used in the core
  • Whether or not it’s tufted, and how deep the tufting is

Unless you have a physical issue – sciatica or nerve damage for e.g., the firmness and support that a mattress delivers is entirely subjective. For some, the ultimate luxury is relaxing onto a mattress that feels as though it’s almost hugging their every contour.  For others, they want something that offers a higher level of support and firmness, in order to achieve a restful night's sleep.

Then there’s the ‘in-between’, the type of support that bridges the gap between firm and soft. Some of our more popular mattresses are in fact the type that accommodates the middle ground, and they’re a great choice if you don’t need a bed that provides concentrated level of support for your back.

Bed history by BedExtra

Purchasing a bed is considered as one of the most important pieces of furniture in the house.  We almost spend a third of our life in our beds.  We sleep in our bed, we rest when we are not feeling that great, we have our best and worst dream in beds - whatever you will use your bed for we need them from birth to death.

Did you know that Winston Churchill used to work from his bed during the World War 2.  Rossini had composed many operas in his bed, and it is also know that writer Marcel Proust even wrote novels such as "In Search of Lost Time", in bed.

The oldest beds were found in Egypt amongst the tombs of princes and kings.  When Pharaoh Tutankhamen was found, there were 5 wooden beds inlaid with ivory, gold and silver, and decorated with lotus flowers. These beds had wooden or ivory headrests to support the enormous pharaoh’s headgear and stools to support their feet, they were practically made to last forever.

In some cultures such as in Assyria time, they used beds in two different ways: one to sleep in and the other to eat.  Inlays of animals and flowers were used to decorate the beds and show its richness and power.  Beds were often encrusted with precious stones and laid on luxurious rugs and carpets, piled for comfort.  In some colder countries nomads used goat skins filled with water to prevent from cold grounds.

Beds have been used to show people the sign of richness and and also its practical use.  Pharaohs would be laid on their beds after their death and Greeks and Romans would do everything, from resting to eating.

In our modern busy world, it is really hard to find the right bed and with different beds available it’s even more important to take the time to be sure of what we buy as beds are a good purchase.
